Locked on the balcony

Being locked out is a situation related with calling an emergency locksmith. Left your key somewhere, lost it, forgot it inside your home, locked out. But what if you get locked in? Is that possible? Yes it is. This time I want to tell you about getting locked on your balcony. Yes, on your balcony. You will be surprise to hear, it happens pretty often. We get calls like that every once in a while. Someone go out on their balcony for a smoke, entertaining friends or whatever reason, close the balcony’s door behind them, and get locked out. For us, as locksmiths, this is a complicated situation as we have to break into the building if needs to, the front door without the property’s owner with us, and when inside to open the balcony for our client. Luckily, research shows that people are very likely to get locked out few times in their lifetime, but the chances for them not to have their mobile phone with them – very low. We seem to care more about having our phones than having our keys. Meaning, if you are unlucky enough to get locked on your balcony, you will probably be lucky enough to have your phone with you to call for help. This is a story happened on Saturday night in our city of Amsterdam. A story about that exact thing.

Locked in?

Come over quick!

The call came at around 9pm on Saturday night. A lady was on the line from Amsterdam Oud West letting me know she is locked on her balcony and can not get back into the apartment. The front door was locked from the inside, so we have a bit of a problem. She already called her neighbour, Sam, and he is waiting on the street for me to take me to her door. “That’s great, I will see Sam in 30 minutes”. I said. Having a neighbour is a huge help as now I don’t have to break into the building’s main door, plus, I will work on the door with someone next to me, less awkward and less explaining to do. You will ask some questions as well if you see someone breaking into a home with the owner not around. I was rushing through Amsterdam Oud West. The car was hugging the narrow streets of Amsterdam on a warm evening. Surprising but true, we do have warm nights here. sometimes. I was rushing as it is a little dangerous when you have someone locked on a balcony for long. They might get impatient. Very quickly they will try to climb down, cross over to a neighbour, jump off or being creative with some circus stunts that can be very risky. As I was pulling into the address I saw Sam waiting outside. Its always great to have good neighbours.

Drill it!

I introduced myself to Sam. He was very nice and patient. “Sarah locked herself on her balcony. She saw me walking my dog and yelled for help.” He quickly explained. “Take me to her door please.” And we climbed up. On the forth floor, at the end of a narrow corridor there was Sarah’s door. I straight away saw it will not be easy. The lock was dead bolted from the inside and it was a five stars security lock guarding her home. Being inside, Sarah locked her door properly, and that makes it more difficult if you like to break in. There was no way to get around it but drilling the lock. I got stuck straight into it. As I was drilling the hard metal chips were flying everywhere. The lock was giving plenty of resistance. Locks are designed to resist break ins so the fight they put up is fierce. I used every muscle in my body to have the lock surrender and snap! The drill bit broke inside the cylinder. The hammer was pulled out and I started swinging. I was sweating over in that tiny corridor using all the tools and skills at my disposal. Eventually the cylinder broke off the lock and I was able to get access to the lock’s mechanism and open the door. Sam was rushing in to have Sarah out of her balcony. I was packing my tools back as she jumped on me with a hug. “OMG! That was scary! I was there having a cigarette and could not get back in! Thank you!!!” She was overwhelmed for a good reason. Can be pretty stressing when you are locked out in the weather up there in the sky. “lucky I had my phone with me!” Sarah almost cried. “That’s ok, it happens” I was giving her some comfort. Very quickly I replaced the drilled cylinder with a new one and was on my way. It happens..

Balcony trouble

If this happens to you, call a locksmith. If you don’t have your phone, shout to anyone passing to call a locksmith. Do not try to climb, jump, cross, break, or anything of such. This can end badly. We are professionals mobile locksmiths and this is our job. Nothing worth getting injured in the process. We will get you back in. I was cruising back to our Amsterdam office thinking about Sarah high up there on her 4th floor balcony stressing out. The warm evening air came trough the car’s window blowing my hair. Lucky Sarah, I was thinking, lucky its not your usual frosty wet and cold Amsterdam weather hitting you up there on your balcony, waiting on your locksmith to come through the door…
