Locksmith is always a locksmith
The mobile locksmiths trade can be unpredictable. Surprising. You never know what is coming from around the corner.. In my work of Amsterdam, I saw it all. Everyone will be getting locked out at some point of their life. From judges to criminals, doctors to bus drivers, young or old. Everyone. well, as I got to find out earlier this week, not just everyone, but everywhere. Our office is in Amsterdam and I have been working there for years. We service every place in the city, but especially the western areas and the neighbourhoods of the Jordaan, Westerpark, Amsterdam west and Oud west. Getting back to the “everywhere” part, it seems like you can get a locksmith out of the hood but anywhere he goes – he’s still a locksmith. So this is here is a story about a locksmith out of his hood still being a locksmith. So this is how it goes..
Locksmith in the air
The plane was shaking like an old washing machine. We are on the runway taking off. It was gathering speed to the dark of the night. No body seems to care much but me. We will crush and burn. I was sure of that. I looked around me looking for stressed faces, but no stress among the passengers. I looked out of the window expecting to see the engine blasting with fire, but other then some clouds I could not see a thing. We will die here I heard myself deep inside my head. Is this the end? Over the past few years I developed some kind of fear of flying. It was not there before. I used to fly plenty with no problems. As I was getting more and more miles I started thinking more about crushing. I was thinking; with all these flights I’m taking, am getting close to the end? I mean, statistically, every safe flight getting you closer to a bad one. No? Pure mathematics. Anyway, it makes sense to me. As I was doing my calculations the plane stabilised and the light dimmed. We are on our way to Lisbon. A locksmith on vacation.
Locksmith on the move
When we landed in beautiful Portugal, things got much better for me. I got out on the terminal in one piece. It was nice and warm, a contrast to the cold harsh weather of Amsterdam. The sunrise was happening in full swing when I got out of the terminal. What a beautiful day. I ordered an Uber and waited on the curb with a muffin I picked up at a cute bakery around the corner. My Uber driver is Rafael and he drives a white Subaru Impreza. According to the Uber app at least. I lifted my eyes off the phone, and here he is. A White Impreza parked right in front of me and inside a young man singing with the radio loud and clear in Portuguese. “Rafael?” I was asking. “Come in! Blocking traffic blocking!” He was screaming over the loud music and I obeyed. Jumped right in. Rafael was king enough to turn the music down. We were heading to the Pombal square in Lisbon centre. We were only came out of the airport when Rafael asked if he can stop very quick for coffee takeaway as its early morning and he only had 3 coffees since he woke up. I was in no hurry so I said no problem. We stoped at a small shopping centre and Rafael jumped out of the car leaving it running. “Just one momento. Short momento please thank you!” He shouted as he disappear inside the coffee shop. I got out of the car as well. I was sitting for hours on the plane and needed to stretch.
Locksmith to the rescue
Rafael came back pretty quick holding two cups of coffee. “You one also. You not look good” he said and I could not agree more. I was definitely not look good. Was a long night. As he gave me my coffee he tried to open the door of the Subaru. It will not open. He looked at me looking at him. Both standing outside the car, engine is running. “What shit!?” Rafael was asking while he tried to open the door again and again, but nothing. I already knew; the car locked itself and we are locked out. Now listen carefully; this can happen. I responded to many callouts of cars locking themselves. Especially when the car’s battery a little flat or recently got disconnected and connected back on. The car’s computer might get mixed up and the car will lock itself. In our case, the car is still running. You should never leave your keys in a car and close the door behind you, as this might happen. And knowing all this, I still did. I am on vacation and do not think like a locksmith overseas. But I can get straight back into it. “Yo Rafael, relax. Run to the Zara shop and get me a coat hanger” Rafael stoped fighting with the car’s door handle and looked at me. “A coat??? Sir the auto not open! What coat now?!” He was not kidding. “A coat HANGER. I will get it open. Im a locksmith.” I felt like James Bond or Superman at the minimum. “You open?” Rafael was doubting. But he went and got that coat hanger. Yes he did.
Locksmith in action
When the car is still running, all the electronics inside will still work. So we were lucky. I could easily unlock it using a metal coat hanger that Rafael kindly got from Zara. I stretched the coat hanger to a pointy arrow with a hook at its end. I used Rafael to pull the door from its frame, to create a crack between the door and the car itself. I squeezed the wire into the car and pointed to the electric window button on the door’s arm rest. I was able to press the button down with the wire and the window was sliding open like magic. Rafael was hugging me and jumping around. He was happy not to call a locksmith and I was happy to help. Pretty simple solution to a problem that can be very expensive. But it was not. Not to Rafael. And we quickly got back on our way to Lisbon centre like nothing happened. Enough locksmith action, I was thinking. Lisbon, here I come!
