Who will call a locksmith?
I have been a locksmiths for a while now. Most of my adult life when thinking about it. I can already know what time of the year will be busier than another, who will be my typical customers in a certain area, how will the Amsterdam traffic will be on a specific hour, how to find parking in the busy Jordaan and how do do my job as a 24/7 mobile locksmith. Even if it’s a call out on 4am in the morning and I’m still half asleep. Why am I telling you this? Because out of the things I know about my work, I also know what will be the main causes for our clients in Amsterdam to phone us. Why will they call for the rescue? I will tell it all here, there’s plenty of reasons. But I will give you a main reason for your next lockout now. Look around you. Do you see a pet? A dog or a cat? Very cute. This cuddly thing will probably be your reason to call a locksmith in some point of the future. Costing you a bit of unplanned expense. Now look at your pet again. Yes, thats right.
Never called a locksmith before!
Yes we hear it often. “I never called a locksmith before!” But you did. And an animal can be the reason. A couple of weeks ago I received a call on the afternoon to a place in De Pijp. The guy asked for an emergency call out and a locksmith to be dispatched quick to his address. We responded and I arrived there within 30 minutes. A very nice English man greet me outside the building, holding a massive fat cat on his hands. We walked into the old Amsterdam building and climbed to the third level, closing the building’s main door behind us. When I looked at the lock I noticed its already half broken, the man was not happy and tried to make his way back in by himself. Not a great idea, ended up calling a locksmith. And here I am. As I was working on his door, the man explained that he is babysitting this “little shit” – the fat cat – and that this cat, as fat as it is, is an escape artist. Apparently every time the door opens, he takes off. “I look around and check a million times that he is not near the door. The minute the door is open to the most tiny crack; he is off! Lucky that the door downstairs is always shut. Then I have to chase his up and down the stairs until he runs back in. Today the little shit took off and the door got shut behind me! This is my first time ever, I never called a locksmith before!” Not a happy camper the man was.
You will be surprised …
Look at me
Another job I clearly remember was a call out to Amsterdam Noord. I arrived at a nice house when a young lady waiting on the street. She walked me into the yard straight in front of a big glass door. on the inside I could very clearly see and hear a big dog jumping on the door very exited. “she’s my baby”. The lady said. “There’s a key stuck on the inside” she kept saying. “I was getting out to empty the trash bin and I closed the door behind me. The key was stuck on the inside. When I came back she was jumping on the door exited, turned the key, and locked the door and me outside” I looked at the massive dog looking at me. You naughty dog, I was thinking. You made your owner call a locksmith when its not even her fault! Still thinking to myself I was. The big dog looked at me and I can swear she understood. I got straight into working on the door and eventually got the nice lady inside. They both seemed very happy to see each other – the lady and the dog.
Pets are part of life in Amsterdam. We live with them and love them. They keep us happy and provide company in our lonely nights. They keep true and loyal companion. Keep an eye on your pet whenever a door situation is happening when they are around. They can be naughty sometimes and you might find yourself in the company of a locksmith in unplanned circumstances. I can testify on that. Such is our life here in beautiful Amsterdam..
