It’s not always pretty. The cloudy grey sky does not always provide you with the colors. The cold weather does not help either.
This evening was different from last night – Thursday Night in Amsterdam. A warm summery Amsterdam was flashing in bright pink, red and blue. I was sitting in my office, having mint tea when the phone rang. “Hello, I’m locked out.” Typical. “On my way”. The mint tea was flying to the garden hedge and in a matter of a minute, I was in my car.
Our aim here, as Locksmiths in Amsterdam, is to respond within 30 minutes of the call. 30 minutes we are at your door. Sounds plenty of time when in fact, no. it is very tight. Hanging up the phone with a client, a few minutes until you’re in the car and moving, 20 minutes or so driving, 10 minutes or so parking hunt in the challenging streets of Amsterdam. You get the picture. Anyway, tea in the bushes, sunset out of a driving car. Vamos. We go. I was trying to enjoy the view while driving. Still communicating with the client regarding my arrival time. Nice person he sounds like. The building was located right in front of the police station in James Wattstraat. The guy was waiting outside. “You for the locksmith?”. “Hi, yes“. “Follow me”. We took the lift in a modern building just on the outskirts of the Pijp. It did not take me long to open the door.
The key was inside so no problem. The guy, John was his name, asked me to follow him to his car because his wallet was in there. For payment. No problem. No one in planning to get locked out and many times I have to show flexibility regarding payments. As we were taking the lift down and walking to his car, we were having a conversation. “Are you dutch?” He straight away asked me. “No, I moved here from Australia about a year ago.” I answered. Very direct client. “Moved here from Australia?!?! Why???”. Well, surprised he was. “Its the best place in the world!” He kept on rubbing it in. “It is. You right. It’s an awesome place. Just awesome.” So yes, I moved here from Australia a little over a year ago. From the blue ocean to the grey Northern sea, from the sunny land to the land of wind and cold, from the vast continent of Australia to the tiny crowded Netherlands. Nevertheless, I love it here.
The hugging streets of Amsterdam reflecting in the water always felt to me like home. The Dutch people, liberal thinkers, beautiful and tall, always welcomed me. I just love it. Therefore, I decided to close down my locksmith business in Australia, a business that I had for over 10 years, and start fresh in Amsterdam. Not easy, but if it was easy everybody would have done it. Right? So that is kind of what I was telling John. Not necessarily in these words. However, in the spirit of that.
He was telling me that he is an expat from Columbia living in Amsterdam. He and his girlfriend, Carmen. They, like everyone else – love it here. That is another thing, how multicultural Amsterdam is? Indians, Chinese, Africans, Europeans, and more, all in a mix. If you are short, tall, red, blue or pink, you are just part of that mix. One piece of the puzzle. Amsterdam with its history of world trading and liberal tradition was always an international hub. Lovely city our Amsterdam. Payment was done, John was happy; I was happy, and back to the next job.
Another day, another happy client.
