Thursday Night in Amsterdam

Customers Stories
amsterdam night out

Still coming out of sickness but feeling much better. Holland is getting warmer in the end of June and the Dutch get more active. When people get active they use doors more and when people use doors more, we are busier with work.

Therefore, when everyone else is walking in Amsterdam, sitting in bars, boating on the water and enjoying summer, we Locksmiths Amsterdam are working. As I was still a bit sick, I took it easy. No crazy amount of jobs for today. Just a couple.

On 4pm, a job came my way. A girl on the phone from Breukelen. Never heard of it yet, a place outside of Utrecht. “My parents went out and I locked myself with no key out of the house. Can you get here?” I looked it up on the map. 34 minutes away. “Yes sure. On my way.” In addition, I was off. You have to be responsive and be on your way quick. You can never know what is going on with that client on the other side of the line. So I went.

The way to Utrecht was green and pretty. I was communicating with the young woman as I was driving. Keeping her in the loop, keeping her relaxed. Help is on her way – No problem. As I was crossing green fields, 8 minutes from the woman’s address, my phone make a sound. A text. “My parents just arrived with a spare key. Sorry but I will need to cancel“. Supper disappointing. Nevertheless, it happens. Kind of a lot. “That’s ok, no problem. I will cancel the job. Keep us in mind if you ever need a locksmith again. Thanks”.

Dinner in Amsterdam

No problem. In this line of work, we have to understand that a client is also a person. In addition, that person have circumstances. Moreover, by the time you get to that person, that person can make his way back to his house and not needing you. That person can break a window, find a key, and decide to sleep at a friend’s or anything else. It is ok and I respect that. It is part of the business.

As I was driving back home I was enjoying the summer warm breeze and the green Netherlands. Beautiful houses with lovely gardens and water everywhere. Beautiful country. I arrived to the office to finish my shift. As I finished at 6pm, I had a call from my girlfriend. “Do you want to meet in Amsterdam for dinner?”. “Sure I do.” It was a warm night and Amsterdam was packed with people sitting on the canals, cycling, coffee places, and restaurants. Amsterdam is beautiful in the summer.

We set in a favorite Thai restaurant of ours for a nice dinner. My phone was low on battery. 8%. The restaurant did not have a charger for me and I felt a little stressed. What if a job going to come in? I need my phone for everything on this job. Communicating, maps, even charging off the clients. Well, hope for the best.

As we were finishing our dinner, yep, a call. Very noisy at the background, I could hardly hear the guy. “What? Sorry? I heard few words; lock, phone, and bar, come over quick. Ok, another job. “Text me the address”. I asked. 5% battery on my phone left. Not great.

The bar “Durty Nellys” is right in the heart of the Red Light District. This is where the caller was and this is where I was heading. Driving the narrow streets of Amsterdam, packed with tourists and people enjoying the warm night was challenging.

Durty Nellys

I was able to park the car not far from the Place. The rest, we walk. Yes, when I say “we” I mean me and my girlfriend that had to be part of it, and when I say “walk” I mean carrying my massive tool box. Not always easy being a locksmith, right?

We arrived at “Durty Nellys”. A very true and old Irish bar. Packed with a happy drunk bunch. The moment I stepped in, the crowd starting clapping. They were all aware about the locksmith situation as the lovely drunken guy that called me was giving them all loud updates on the situation. And the situation? This lovely guy locked his phone and wallet in the “safe for rent” in the bar and lost the key.

“Don’t worry” He goes. “I’m the one paying and I will also pay for fixing the safe after you’re done. Break it.” Ok. “Break it?” I asked again. “Break it!” He confirms what I already thought I heard. The bar owner gives me the green light as well and I get right into it. I ask one of the drunken crowd to give me a hand. He jams a screwdriver in the crack of the safe and I am hammering a crew bar in the gap. The whole bar is cheering with interest. Who will win? The men or the safe? After a long wile of hammering, banging and forcing, the safe give up and with a massive cracking sound, open! I’m happy and so is everyone. I reject drink offers, charge, get some hugs and kisses on my way out the guy and rush for my poor beautiful girlfriend waiting outside.

A locksmith’s girlfriend life never boring…
