There could be few reasons to replace a euro cylinder.

  1. Changing your key – in order to change your key to a new one for a lock operated by a euro cylinder there’s no need to change the entire lock. Changing the euro cylinder will be good enough as the new cylinder will have new key to activate your locking mechanism.
  2. Lost keys – if you loose your key you could obtain a new one by simply changing the cylinder that operate the lock. This will give you new set of keys for your door.

How to replace a Euro Cylinder

So how to replace a euro cylinder?

  1. Find the mounting screw that hold the cylinder into place. That screw will be placed and found on the  side of the door, above or below the latch. The mounting screw will point into the side of the cylinder. If you can not locate it at that spot, try to remove the cover plate covering the latch. Sometimes the screw will be under it.
  2. Unscrew the mounting screw holding the cylinder in place. You should immediately feel how the cylinder becomes loose to the touch when you grab it. If the cylinder stays tight to the door when you unscrew the screw, you are unscrewing the wrong screw. Remove the mounting screw.
  3. Insert the key in the key hole. You will need to turn the key in the cylinder in order to have it removed off the door. Pull the cylinder out of the lock as you turn the key. The cylinder should slide out and come off the door. You might have to apply some pressure if the lock is a little old or have dirt inside it.
  4. Insert the new euro cylinder into the cylinder hole after the removal of the old cylinder. Press and push it into the lock through the cut of the door. The cylinder will not go all the way in. That is ok.
  5. Insert the new key for the new euro cylinder into the cylinder and turn it. While you turn the key, push the cylinder into the lock’s body. The cylinder should slide into place. Use mild force if necessary as the lock’s body can have dirt or rust on it.
  6. Insert the mounting screw through the lock’s body into the cylinder and tight it. You will have to feel and guide the mounting screw into the euro cylinder’s body and screw it in. You should feel how the cylinder became stable while it’s mounted into the lock.
  7. Test the key and make sure that the cylinder operate the lock properly. Test it when the door is open before you test it while the door is shut. The last thing you want is for the cylinder to stop working while the door is shut and locked.
  8. You’re done!
