DIY How to install a Door Closer

Why to install a hydraulic Door Closer?

Having a door closer will ad safety to your point of entry by regulating the speed and force of your door opening and closing. The wind, children, guests, pets and other elements could have your door slammed shut or aggressively open. When excessive force is used on a door it could get damaged, glass might be broken or even a finger could get injured. The Door Closer provide also a peaceful closing and prevent noise. Another reason is that a door will never stay open. A Door Closer, as its name suggest, will make sure your door stay closed and that it will close itself if stayed open. So how can you install it yourself? Be your own locksmith!

Step by step installation

  1. Unbox your new Door Closer and read the instructions carefully.
  2. Look at the drawing and plan of installation to understand the position of the Door Closer and its arm on the door and door frame.
  3. Position the Door Closer on the door according to the measurements provided on the instructions and mark the screw holes. Do the same for the crew holes of the arm.
  4. Once the screw holes are clearly marked on the door and door’s frame, use a fine drill bit to drill small holes for the screws to be screwed in.
  5. Mount the Door Closer with its screws to the door. Mount the arm with its screws to the door’s frame. 
  6. Adjust the pressure of the Door Closer by turning the 2 screws on its side. One screw determine the swing speed of the door and the other the latching action. 
  7. You are done! Your Door Closer is safely installed. 

 

DIY Tips

Mage sure you are reading the instructions carefully. It is very important to place the Door Closer in its right spot. Otherwise the door will not open smoothly or will not shut properly. Still with the instructions, make sure you are using the right screws for the installation. The kit provided with your new Door Closer will have few screws; timber screws, steel screws, longer screws and short ones. You will need to fit the right screw for the material of your door, thickness etc. Another point to pay attention too, is the speed of closing and latching. As explained above, your Door Closer will have 2 screws on its side to control the speed of closing and the energy of latching. Make sure it is calibrated the right way.
