No one like to get locked out. But it happens. It happens to the best of us and sometimes, more than once. The most common way to be locked out is walking away without your keys. We present here what some people call: unlocking a locked door with a card. It’s a very effective and easy way to get back into your home when locked out. But we have to say, this will work only when you walked out of your house and locked yourself out by shutting the door behind you. If the door is dead bolted with a key that you don’t have, you could not get in using this system. So let’s get straight into it.

TOOLS

All you need in order for you to unlock your door without calling a locksmith, is a piece of plastic. Again, assuming the door is only slammed shut and lot dead bolted. This piece of plastic has to be thin enough to slide in the crack between your door and the door frame. If your door has a rubber seal around it or around the frame, it will be a little harder to insert the plastic in the gap. This piece of plastic has to also be strong enough not to get ripped in the process and also to be able to push the latch back (we will explain more below). You could get this material from a bottle of cola or any other juice. You could also use the plastic of a milk bottle. Cut a square from the bottle and you are ready to go. We recommend you looking in the trust bins when in a need for this bottle. Plenty of plastic there. Let’s start. 

THINGS TO CHECK

You will have to check, or know, a couple of things before you start in order to be able to unlock your door. To seat with; locks were build to keep people out. So if the door is locked, it will not always be easy. Some locks have a protection mechanism that prevent the latch moving back if you try to you this method. And there is only one way to find out. Try it. You will only find out if the door protected or not after you try. Another thing to consider is the gap between the door and the frame. Some doors are loose with a big gap and some are very tight. You will have to have the plastic between the door and the frame, so this is important. Also rubber seal around the door or frame could be in your way. Just squeeze the plastic hard enough in the gap and you will be ok. Let’s start!

UNLOCKING YOUR DOOR

Cut a square plastic card from that bottle you found in the trash bin. Have the square big enough, basically as big as you can. You will then have to insert the plastic card you got from the bottle in the gap between the door and the door’s frame. If the gap between the door and the frame is tight, use your body weight to push the door inside and have the crack a little wider. Insert the plastic card in the gap all the way in. Have just the edge of it sticking out and the rest sticking from the inside of the house. Move the plastic from under the latch to the place the latch is. it will move freely until it will hit the latch. The latch is the bit that lock your door to the frame. You will know that you hit the latch when you could not pull up the plastic anymore. It will hit a hard spot; that is the latch. Now, push the plastic square piece against the latch. This is “The credit card system”, the one you see in the movies. Like in the movie when James Bond use a credit card to break into a submarine, you will use the plastic square on your door. Pull the plastic and at the same time press it against the latch. The door will finally open after a couple of wrestling moves coming from you. Use force on the plastic if needs to do so. Its not always easy. 

CONCLUTION 

Doors and locks are made to stay shut when locked. In order to unlock your door without a key you will need a couple of things; tools and skills. Your tool of choice is a piece of plastic coming from a plastic bottle. Your skills will be obtained through the exercise of you trying to unlock your own door. It will not be easy but in most cases possible. Try your best. If you can not unlock your door with the card, you can always call a locksmith. Our locksmiths are well trained professionals.
