Our Amsterdam
Millions of tourists travel to Amsterdam every year to experience our beautiful city. They pay good money, take time of work, plan their trip for months and come here. When arrived, they will walk on the water, cross over old bridges, and admire the narrow streets and ancient buildings. Amsterdam is beautiful and captivating. You will fall in love. We are lucky enough to live Amsterdam in a different way. We work the narrow streets, climb into them old buildings, meet the Amsterdamers every hour of the day. Or night. More than that, we locksmiths get to reach all of Amsterdam’s areas and neighbourhoods and we see every little corner. People of Amsterdam will have lock problems anywhere and anytime. Not only on the tourist district. I will travel into the Jordaan at 4am to help a drunk man, into De Pijp in the morning to change a lock, to Oud west to help a migrant family with their door, to a building site in Amsterdam Oost to install new locks or even to the Bijlmer early hours of the weekend to climb the second level into an open window. So I thought about giving you here some info from your Amsterdam locksmith near me about how we see our city from our perspective. Sit back, relax, here we go..
Amsterdam Noord
I knew very little about Amsterdam Noord until I started working here. Its always on the other side of the water and kinda far off. I was on my way to a call out to replace a cylinder. I travelled on the ring crossing into Noord. I was facing with old waterways and ship loading docks. The ground around were muddy and you could vision old unbuilt Amsterdam of back in the day. All over there are new construction happening. Tall modern buildings with thousands of apartments are everywhere. Not many tourist but mainly young residents live here. You can cross the water on the ferry, and 10 minutes after you will be deep in Centrum. I replaced a cylinder for a couple pf greek girls moving into a newly built apartment. They also said the peep hole in their door is faulty. it was too high up on the door and they could not reach it and check when someone knocked. I explained that this door and the drilled peep hole are made for the average hight of the Dutch.. Greek will need a stool..
Amsterdam West
Amsterdam’s wild west as we call it. I love it. Used to be a rough area now it’s full of migrants from the middle east and Surinam. Awesome food, plenty of parking and colourful crowd. I get called out to the West plenty as our office is not far. So Google maps give us priority over the other locksmiths for jobs there. The other night I was called out by a young Egyptian guy who was locked out. As I was working we exchanged stories about our mothers and in particular; how professional they were throwing their sleepers at us and never missed. I remembered how my mom used to get me with her flying sleeper bending it around corners. I have a warm spot in my heart for Amsterdam west and always happy to get work there.Â
De Pijp
Up and coming, De Pijp is the hip area of Amsterdam. Very young and mainly local residents there. Full of bars and restaurants it will always provide work for locksmiths from the ones home late. I was called to De Pijp just a couple of days ago. Young lady who left her keys in an Uber. As the lock was secure and I did not want to break it, I found myself on the shoulders of a drunk stranger, climbing to the open window on the second level. Very nice and extremely unstable the guy was giving me pointers while I was fighting for my life. I managed to cling to the window’s frame by my fingernails, as I was balancing my foot on his bald head. Dropping myself into the bedroom I was searching in the dark for the main door. The happy guy was cheering and got invited for coffee inside by the young lady. Could be a start of a beautiful friendship there. Or something completely different.Â
Same same, different hood
I meant to wright about Amsterdam’s neighbourhoods here all. But the old city has so many corners and I have few words. I will bring you more about our living of Amsterdam hidden corners on our work as mobile locksmiths here. In the future. Its a promise..
