Locksmiths Amsterdam West

Amsterdam West evening view

As a mobile locksmith in Amsterdam, I’ve had a range of experiences over the years, from helping people who have locked themselves out of their homes to repairing broken locks and installing new ones. Locksmiths . Amsterdam is part of the city fabric and as such, is embedded in the Amsterdam life. This post is about an experience I had in Amsterdam West. A common scenario in a locksmith line of work.

Slotenmakers Amsterdam West

It was a night in August, and I had just finished my dinner when I received a call from a woman who was somehow in a panic state. She explained that she had locked her keys inside her apartment, and needed to get back into her place as soon as possible because she had left the stove on. She was worried that her apartment was going to catch fire, and she needed someone to come to her rescue.

This is a common scenario in our line of work. Some people have their stove on, some have a baby locked inside, some have an elderly person and so on. In cases like this, we will race in together with the Amsterdam Fire Department normally. Whoever gets there first will get the door open. The Fire Department will very often just break the door open. Not us.

Pretty quick I jumped into my van and headed to her address, which was in the old area of Amsterdam West. I just love this neighbourhood. Used to be the rough side of Amsterdam, today’s Amsterdam West is a multicultural mix on the fringe of Amsterdam centre. Amsterdam West.  The city council invested a lot of money here and made it an attractive place to be. The food is diverse, the people nice and plenty of young couples moving in.

I was driving the narrow streets as fast as possible, within the speed limit obviously. When I arrived, I could see a lady standing on the road and was visibly anxious. She stood outside the apartment building. When I parked the car I noticed her shaken and definitely looked like she was about to burst into tears. But she didn’t.

I introduced myself as Locksmiths . Amsterdam technician and tried to reassure her that I would be able to help. “We always get in” I gave her my catch fraise. It seamed to come her down a little, always does. “Im Lucy, thanks.. Im freaking out here” she said. Lucy explained that she is desperate to get into her apartment, as she was worried about the stove and also had some important documents that she needed to retrieve.

We climbed up the narrow and very steep steps of this old Amsterdam West building. The apartment was on the top level, it seams like they always are. At least to me it seams. We got there eventually, huffing and puffing. At least I was. I was facing a blue door with a massive brass lock on it. Amsterdam West style. I quickly assessed the situation and decided that the best approach would be to pick it. That lock. I looked at him, it looked straight back at me. We both feared and respected each other. We both knew there’s a fight coming. And we both knew I will win. Like it or not mister.

I inserted my picking tools into this guy and began my work. He resisted me with protection pins and restricted profile. He will not make it easy. He was build to protect and he will not let anyone without a key to enter. But I am a determined skilled and tooled up Amsterdam Locksmith. “I will get in if you like it or not!” I was speaking to him in my mind, obviously. “In your dreams you will” I heard him yelling back. In my mind I heard him. After a few minutes of wrestling and some creative locksmith manoeuvres, I was able to hear the satisfying “click” and the brass lock opened tired and defeated.

I turned to Lucy and smiled, “He is open.” She looked at me and asked; “Who’s he?” Ah, yes a legitimate question. “The lock. Sorry I was dreaming a little. The lock.” I gave him a glance and he looked back at me. We will keep that between us, I thought. No need to be weird.. I saw Lucy running to fly kick the oven button shut, with an impressive low kick. Some UFC moves. She was still sweating but now more relaxed and relieved. Lucy thanked me many times, paid me and I was gone. Amsterdam West style.

As I drove back to my office, I reflected on the experience. It was a reminder of how important the work of a locksmith is. Especially in the old city of Amsterdam. can you imagine an Amsterdam, 200 years old standing museum of a building, catching fire because of a pot of rise locked by itself? Not on my watch.. not tonight brother
